Injection technique

Recommendation: Injection with a skin fold at a 90° angle

We recommend that you inject into a skin fold at a 90° angle (vertically). Without a skin fold people often inject too deeply and hit the muscle tissue. Make a skin fold when injecting by pinching the skin between the thumb and forefinger (do not pull up the muscle as well). Choose a suitable needle length.

Injection with a skin fold at a 45° angle

Injecting at an angle is only recommended when there is very little subcutaneous fatty tissue. If you inject at an angle, the angle should be at least 45°. If you inject at an angle of less than 45°, the insulin may only reach the dermis, and this may then possibly cause a weal or bruising at the injection site.

Injection without a skin fold at a 45° angle or 90° angle

You can inject without a skin fold if you have a very thick layer of subcutaneous fatty tissue. It is important to note that injecting at a 45° angle is recommended when you do not use a skin fold. The needle should be short or medium-length at the most (6 to 8 mm or 10 mm).

You should inject insulin at a 90° angle (vertically) without a skin fold only in exceptional circumstances, as the risk of injecting into the muscle is especially high.
